When I was a young mother with a 4 year old son, (about 1982) he went with me one day shopping. We passed a toy store and there was an expensive Steiff bear in the window. He had a fit wanting that bear. I promised to make him one. I stopped into a fabric store because I needed to buy some buttons. I purchased a teddy bear pattern and some faux fur fabric. My mother had been a seamstress and I had watched her modify patterns. When I laid out the pattern pieces, I saw that the bear my son wanted had longer arms, a different shape to the head, larger feet, than the pattern. So I modified the pattern and cut out the fabric. I did not have a sewing machine, so I hand-sewed the bear. When I finished it, I was not pleased with it, so I threw it in a drawer and started another bear, unaware that my sons little eyes were watching. The next day, I looked for the first bear. I found it in his bed. He had dressed it in his pajama top, and tucked it under his pillow. I continued making the second bear I had started. Friends asked me to make bears for their children, and even for themselves. That is how I began making bears. I have been creating bears and soft sculpture animals for over 40 years now, and plan to continue as long as possible. I have met the nicest people through my bear business! The people who adopt my bears become long-time friends.
I started in California, USA. I now lives in Florida. I hand stitch my creations from my own original designs. I make bears and little animals from 2 and a half inches tall to 30 inches tall. I mostly use mohair and cotter pin/ wooden disc joints. I hand embroider the noses, uses glass or boot button eyes, and love to use vintage lace or vintage doll and baby clothes with my creations, or unusual little trinkets as accessories. Sometimes, I hand stitch a little vest or collar for a bear. My other artistic endeavors include oil painting, and sculpting art dolls from polymer clay. Donny Dibs is an 8 inch tall bunny who has been out in McGregor's garden. He called dibs on 4 juicy carrots and pulled them up, stuck 3 in his basket, and he's holding one in his paw. He is 7 inches tall sitting, not counting his long bendable ears, or up to 10 inches, including the ears fully up. He is 8 inches tall standing with his ears down, or 11.5 inches tall standing with them up. His arms and ears are bendable. His fur is soft fluffy sandy beige mohair. He sports a red polka dot bow tie. His blue eyes are glass, and the pads on the long feet and inner ears are light brown suede. He is signed on a foot. The nose and mouth are stitched.

Her fur is soft white alpaca, and she has light pink paw pads and inner ears. Her paws have trapunto needle-sculpted toes and shading. She has nylon whiskers. Kitty is 9" tall sitting, 11 inches tall standing. She has a cute perky tail, and is jointed at the neck and all four limbs. Peter is a little white rabbit with big blue glass eyes, standing about 7.5 inches tall, including his bendable ears, or about 6 inches tall with them down. Sitting, he is just under 5 inches, up to 6.5 inches when his ears are up. His fur is soft white mohair. The nose and mouth are hand-stitched with taupe floss, as are the toes. Taupe suede foot pads and inner ears accent his white color, and he is signed on one of the long foot pads. Peter wears a blue velvet star-point collar with silvery bells on 4 points. Zigs and Zags are miniature Gollies, just a tiny bit over 5 inches tall (not including the hair). They are made of wool felt and velvet, from my own original design, and are totally hand sewn. They have little google eyes, are jointed at neck, arms and legs. This auction is for one of them, your choice. These are the only 2 that will ever be made like this. They are so slim that it was difficult to turn them. They are very detailed. They have blue pants, red sleeves and tails,a gold vest, and beaded buttons on the vests and tails. A tiny blue bow tie, a rosette, spats on their shoes, and a big red mouth. $200.00 USD for the pair (not Including furniture or tea set.)
